5th & 6th Grades

In addition to classroom activities, 5th and 6th graders are encouraged to take advantage of other activities which promote sportsmanship, individuality and kindness. 
 
Here are a few of the opportunities offered to these students outside of the classroom.
 
SPORTS
 
Middle School Teams
6th Graders can participate on Middle School Teams.  These teams compete other schools while learning basic skills in such sport as well as the invaluable lessons of being part of a team.  Details on try-outs, etc variy with sport.  
Athletic opportunities for Middle Schoolers include:
 
Softball, Baseball, Football, Track, Cheerleaderleading, and Cross Country. 
 
 
 
Jr. Pro Football and Cheerleading Program -- 5th Grade  
Students in Grades 3-5 can participate in football or cheerleading. Games are typically on Tuesday evenings.  Practice will be after school. These Jr. Pro student-athletes may stay after school for a fee ($7/day) to have a snack and get homework help (until time for practice).  A packet of information on both Football and Cheerleading is usually available toward the end of the school year in the spring.  Please contact the front office for more information.
 
Cross Country (fall) 
Looks like a Great Day for a Run with Coach Heather Wilcher.  Students will practice running on campus.  An ocassional meet 'against' same age-range students from other nearby schools at the school or Magnolia Springs State Park.  Schedule varies.
 
OTHER ACTIVITIES
 
Accelerated Reader Program  
Students in Grades 1-6 are actively reading books, passing tests and developing a love of reading.  These teachers use AR effectively in varying ways. 
 
5th & 6th Charleston Field Trip  (every other year)
This 3 day - 2 night field trip to Charleston with Kelley Tours proves to be a valuable experience for all who participate.  It is well supervised with school faculty, administration and others.
 
4-H (University of Georgia Extension Service) 
Students in Grades 5 & 6 will form clubs.  Monthly an Extension Agent will come to school to expose students to 4H.
 
C.H.A.M.P.S. (sponsored by Burke County Sheriff's Office) - 5th grade
C.H.A.M.P.S. (Choosing Healthy Activities and Promoting Safety) is a 20-week program to help young people resist pressures which may influence them to experiment with drugs. They also are taught ways to avoid bullying, peer pressure, violent behavior and making good choices. Several safety topics such as Hunting, ATV and Boating Safety are also included. This program was started by the Georgia Sheriff's Association and is taught to the fifth grade students by a deputy from the Burke County Sheriff's Office.
 
Weekly Chapel 
Thursday Chapel is student-led worship with various community leaders delivering the message.  Grades 5th-12th attend.
 
Reading Buddy Program with 1st grade
Students will help 1st graders learn to read aloud with greater ease and for better comprehension.
