Daily Devotional

The scripture for today is 1 Chronicles 21:17. Before I begin reading the scripture, you need to have some background information. King David, following a major victory over the Philistines, made a major mistake by counting the number of men in his military. His pride in the growth of his kingdom blinded his judgment, and he began to trust the strength of his military power for defense of his nation more than he trusted God. God was very displeased with David. A plague was sent upon Israel and 70,000 people died as a result. Today’s scripture is David’s response to God:

And David said to God, “I am the one who called for the census! I am the one who has sinned and done wrong! But these people are as innocent as sheep—what have they done? O Lord my God, let your anger fall against me and my family, but do not destroy your people.” 1 Chronicles 21:17 (NLT)

David’s willingness to take responsibility for his foolish action demonstrated his depth of character. David refused to project blame. David asked for forgiveness and accepted punishment for his action. Many leaders attempt to hide failures, blame others, or run from God. Not David. He admitted his failure and repented. Although he faced many difficulties, David worked to restore his relationship with God and did whatever he could to minimize the consequences of his failure in the lives of others. Much like David, if we wish to lead we must take full responsibility for our actions and confess them and ask for forgiveness. As our Leader’s Promise stated, we must be aware of how much God has already forgiven us, and continue to own up to our mistakes.
